If a pet seems unwell
If you notice something doesn’t seem right, the first step is to contact the pet owner immediately. Pet owners know their pets best and should be kept informed so they can guide next steps wherever possible.
In an emergency
If a situation feels urgent and waiting could put the pet at risk, you’re allowed to seek immediate veterinary care. Acting in good faith to protect a pet’s wellbeing is always supported.
Once the pet is safe, the owner should be informed as soon as possible. Where available, sitters should use the vet details provided by the pet owner.
Veterinary visits and costs
Sitters are not expected to cover veterinary costs. Any vet expenses remain the responsibility of the pet owner, unless otherwise agreed between both parties.
To help things go smoothly:
- Use the owner’s preferred vet and insurance details where possible
- Avoid agreeing to non-emergency treatment without owner consent
- Keep communication clear and timely throughout
Using the pet owner’s medical and vet information
Pet owners may share important information to help you care for their pet confidently. This can include:
- Relevant medical details or ongoing conditions
- Medication instructions
- Preferred vet and emergency contact details
- Pet insurance information, if applicable
If a pet needs veterinary care, use the information provided by the pet owner wherever possible and keep them informed throughout.
Sitters are not expected to make medical decisions beyond emergency care, and veterinary costs remain the responsibility of the pet owner unless otherwise agreed.
